Every public sector units except the State Bank of India recruits their employees through Common Written Examination (CWE). This examination is conducted by the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). The preliminary examinations are likely to be held in October of year. Approximately 15 lakhs of students appeared for the examination and among them 2.5 to 3 lakhs students appear for the main examination. The basic structure for the examination is listed below:


The structure of the Examination which will be conducted in two tier. The questions are objective in nature consisting of four papers.

  1. Expected Pattern of Tier I (1 hr Duration)
    a. English Language 30 Marks
    b. Quantitative Aptitude 35 Marks
    c. Reasoning Ability 35 Marks
  2. Expected Pattern of Tier II (2 hr Duration)
  • Reasoning Ability 50 Marks
  • Numerical Aptitude 50 Marks
  • Computer 20 Marks
  • English Language 40 Marks
  • General Awareness 40 Marks

In order to qualify in the written test, the candidate should pass in each of the objective tests separately with required minimum qualifying marks. It is also necessary for the candidate to obtain the prescribed percentage of marks to be eligible for moving to next stage of selection, i.e., Personal Interview. These are some excellent tips to be used to crack the IBPS examinations:

Breakdown and determine Goals:

It is the foremost thing to set your goals and work accordingly over it. You need to make a thorough plan of your overwhelmed syllabus and try to cover all the relevant and necessary points. There exists IBPS Pomodoro technique which helps to focus in better way for your preparations. This Pomodoro comprises of 25 minutes preparation and study time with an extra 5 minute break. A necessary breaks in crucial to make your study better.

Track daily on Mocks:

Just reading and learning won’t help you in cracking IBPS exam. The examination requires a lot of practice and knowledge to be tested. CWE is totally dependent on speed, accuracy which is not attained all of sudden; but requires a thorough practice over it. Practice and test yourself through Mock Tests every week to check your speed and accuracy level growth chart.

Key Role of GK and English:

General Awareness and English is the most scoring and less tedious part of CWE. Never neglect GK or English in the studies as it could be quant and can lead to wastage of time in the examination.

Computer Knowledge:

Computer Knowledge is highly scoring section in IBPS POs and RRB (Regional Rural Banks). All the Questions will be from well known Concepts such as Computer Terminology, Basic Computer Architecture, Internet, MS-Office, Computer Network, Database, and Operating System etc.

Reasoning- The Golden Egg:

This section is the most scoring section and you can score even 100 percent if you optimize your time in well manner. The most important aspect is the time management. If you are well at reasoning it would require only 20 to 25 minutes of your examination allocating each question with mere 35 seconds. Accuracy is the utmost aspect because there exists negative markings too.

But if you are not good at reasoning skip the part for the last and do not allocate more than 15 minutes to this section.

Types of questions that come across you in this section include classifications, odd pair, series completion, Analogy; Direction based Tests, Number, Ranking and Time Sequence Test and Alphabet Test. Solving easy and medium difficulty questions will surpass you in this section; but to score more marks need to have accuracy in even difficult questions.

Quantitative Aptitude Section: The Toughest one:

This is the toughest section of the paper. Most of the students are not expert in this section. If quant is not your strength, attempt this section after verbal section and do not allocate more than 20 minutes to this section. The types of questions you are here to face in this section include Simplification, Problems on Age, Percentage, Average, Simple Interest, and proportions, etc. Attempt the easiest question first and be cautious while attempting this section as it could eats away your precious times.

Be Inspired and Connected:

Always read motivational books, success stories to keep yourself motivated and inspired from negativity. Always stay connected with others who are also appearing for the examination to share your queries with them online for the IBPS PO Examination.

Also try to get connected with the people who have succeeded in the examination. They can give you their live experience shared with you for the CWE.

Freshen up yourself:

Studying 24X7 always do not work. Keep some of your quality time in spending with friends, watching movies, and other things that can freshen up your minds. Do not take too much stress of your studies as break is too vital as like as studies.

There are plenty of books that you won’t be able to read. Also there exists something that are missed out too while preparing for the examination. So do not panic or overwhelmed. Understanding the concept is crucial rather than book worming.

  1. Do not panic and be calm while you appear for the examination.
  2. Stay away from all the distractions. Just concentrate on your questions, other things will surely wait for you. They will remain alive!!!
  3. Note down all the relevant points in a short note to be taken as quick glance before examination.
  4. Even if you were not too good for this examination, do not crib but strive hard for the next examination.
