IES Exam Pattern:
The selection procedure for IES posts comprises of the following two sections:
- Part I : Written examination
- Part II: Viva Voce/ Interview
PART I : Written Examination:
In Part I, The combined written exam has two distinct sections, namely, the Indian Economic Service and Indian Statistical Service. Check the tables for subject names, maximum allotted marks, and time limits for the upcoming IES written examination.
- The IES and ISS questions have to be answered in English.
- General English and General Studies papers are common to IES and ISS.
- In ISS exam, Paper 1 and Paper 2 have objective type questions.
- All other IES and ISS papers have conventional subjective type or essay questions.
- ISS subjective type/ essay questions have short answer, long answer, and comprehension pattern.
- Descriptive answers have to be provided for all the subjective questions.
PART-II : Viva Voce/ Interview:
A competent and unbiased Interview Board is constituted to conduct the viva voce. The interview supplements the written exam and the candidate’s’ performance is evaluated for 200 marks. The objective of the interview panel is to assess the candidate’s’ general skills and specialised knowledge. The candidates have to convey their attitude, abilities, and suitability for the post in a confident manner.

Questions include general awareness topics, current affairs and latest events of relevance at State, National, or International level. Candidates should display their knowledge of current trends, modern thinking patterns, and innovative concepts. The interview has a natural flow, and the candidate has to impress the Board with his or her character, critical and analytical skills, reasoning power, enthusiasm, body language, attentiveness, initiative, and sound judgment.
