IAS Eligibility Criteria

1. Nationality:

  • A citizen of India, or
  • A subject of Nepal, or
  • A subject of Bhutan, or
  • A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India Or
  • A person of Indian origin who has relocated from Malawi, Uganda, Srilanka, Burma, East African countries of Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Pakistan,  Zambia, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

2. Age Limits

The maximum age limit is 32 years for General category candidates. OBC, SC/ST, and handicapped aspirants receive upper age relaxations of 3, 5, and 10 years respectively. These limits also apply to Army personnel, domiciled citizens, and other special categories.

3. Physical Standards:

The physical requirements and standards needed to appear and get selected for Services Examination is specified every year. The guidelines are available in the latest Rules for Examination that was published in the Gazette of India Extraordinary for the year 2017-18.

4. Maximum Attempts:

The General category candidates can appear for the exam for a maximum of 6 times. OBC candidates have 9 chances, and SC/ST candidates can appear as long as they are not beyond the upper age limit. Handicapped candidates, Army personnel, and domiciled citizens also have the same limits for exam attempts, depending on the category. Please check the below table for detailed information:

What Is IAS Qualification?

Candidates who have following qualifications can apply for the Indian Administrative Service exam 2017-18.

  • Graduates with a Bachelor’s Degree in relevant discipline from the recognized University or Institute.
  • Students who await final year graduate examination results can also apply for Civil Services Preliminary Examination.
  • The candidates should be able to submit proof of graduation by the time of Civil Services Main Examination.
  • Government recognised professional or technical qualifications that are equivalent to a degree are also acceptable.
  • MBBS graduates can apply for Civil Services (Main) Examination before completion of internship on a temporary basis. Candidates have to produce final MBBS degree proof at the time of interview.
